Equine Physiotherapy

Below is a short video demonstrating part of a physiotherapy session.

Veterinary Physiotherapy is routinely recommended in all horses. Physiotherapists work with a range of conditions including, but not restricted to:

  • Back pain · Neck pain · Muscular spasm
  • Muscular imbalances
  • Joint stiffness
  • Neurological conditions
  • Soft tissue injuries such as tendon, ligament and muscle
  • Degenerative conditions such as osteoarthritis
  • Lameness
  • Post surgical cases

Below are signs that your horse may be in pain:

  • Reluctance to go forwards or resistance to exercise
  • Head shaking
  • Bucking or rearing
  • Disunited canter or setting off on the wrong canter lead
  • Difficulty maintaining a contact
  • Reluctance to have the saddle put on

Alex uses a range of approaches within her Physiotherapy practice depending on the needs of you and your animal:

  1.  Bespoke rehabilitation plans tailored to your goals
  2. A range of manual therapy techniques
  3. Advice and education tailored to recovery and self management
  4. Electrotherapy including low level laser therapy and neuromuscular electrical stimulation

All treatments are holistic in approach and applied using clinical reasoning to ensure you/your animals receives the best care.

In line with the Veterinary Surgeons Act (1966) I require veterinary consent for any animal that has an active/recent problem/pathology, such as post surgery, injury or lameness issue. For any maintenance physiotherapy for a horse with no active lameness issues/post surgical needs, I am able to treat without veterinary consent. If any issues were to arise during a session, I would liaise with your Veterinarian as appropriate. I can also liaise with your saddler, farrier and trainer to optimise care if this is indicated.
